Reddit is now the most-cited source in AI search. What that means for AU businesses
The number
Reddit is the #1 cited source across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, with citation frequency around 40%. Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn round out the top 5.
5W's AI Platform Citation Source Index pooled 680 million citations across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews from six independent studies between August 2024 and April 2026. The single biggest finding: Reddit is the #1 cited source across every major engine, with citation frequency around 40%.
For Australian businesses still building their digital strategy around Google PageRank, Reddit is the channel most agencies are not telling you to invest in. The data says otherwise.
The citation share data
Five independent measurements, all 2025-2026.
5W Index 2026 (680M citations): Reddit ~40% across every engine. Top 15 domains absorb 68% of all citations. Top 5 = 38% of AI Overview citations alone.
thedigitalbloom (36M AI Overviews, 46M citations): Reddit at 21% of all AIO citations, after a 450% surge between March and June 2025. YouTube at 23.3%, Wikipedia at 18.4%, Google.com at 16.4%. The top 10 domains capture 54% of citations.
Semrush (230,000+ prompts, 13 weeks): Perplexity's top-cited sources are Reddit, LinkedIn, NIH, Microsoft and Google. In some categories, Reddit alone hits 46.7% of citations. AI Mode's top-cited domains: LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, Google and Google Blog.
Yext (6.8M citations): ChatGPT pulls 48.73% of its citations from third-party sites (Yelp, TripAdvisor, MapQuest). Gemini does the opposite, pulling 52.15% from brand-owned websites.
Volatility flag. ChatGPT's Reddit citation share fell from around 60% to around 10% over six weeks in late 2025 after a single Google parameter change. Reddit dominance is real, but the exact share is volatile and depends on engine-specific configuration. Over-indexing on one engine is risky.
Why AI engines prefer Reddit
Three structural reasons. None of them are about Reddit being more trustworthy than your site.
Live human signal. AI engines that need fresh, opinionated, locally specific content lean on Reddit because traditional news cycles do not cover small-business queries like best plumber in Penrith or is X accountant good. Reddit threads do.
Citation graph effect. Reddit threads link out to news, government, Wikipedia and brand pages. AI engines that crawl for citations end up routing through Reddit as a discovery hub.
Volume and freshness. Reddit publishes more user-generated content per day than most national publishers per month. AI engines that index recent content cannot avoid Reddit.
The implication for an Australian business: if a Reddit thread for your category exists and your competitor is named in it, an AI engine will cite your competitor. If no thread exists, the engine cites whoever has commented most credibly on the topic anywhere on Reddit.
What to do about it (without being spammy)
Reddit is hostile to overt marketing. The community will downvote anything that smells like a sales pitch, and brand accounts get banned. The practical play is different.
Find the subreddits where your customers actually ask questions. For tradies: r/AusBuilders, r/AusRenovation, r/AusFinance. For professional services: r/AusFinance, r/AustralianTeachers, r/AusBusiness. For local services: r/Sydney, r/Melbourne, r/Brisbane plus suburb-specific subs.
Answer questions with your own name and credentials disclosed. I am a [thing], so take that into account, but here is what the data says. Real expertise from a real account beats brand voice every time.
Cite your sources. Reddit threads that link to government data, peer-reviewed studies or specific ATO/ABS pages get upvoted. Threads that do not get downvoted. AI engines pick up cited threads at much higher rates than rant threads.
Do not link-spam your own website. One link per six or seven comments is the unwritten rule. Anything more aggressive and the thread (and you) gets removed.
This is slow. It is also the channel that compounds. Reddit citation rank is a function of comment karma and tenure on the platform. There is no advertising shortcut.
Where Cluo fits
Cluo's portal tracks where your business shows up across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. If you have invested time on Reddit (or want to start), the portal shows when it is starting to flow through to AI citations. From $50/month. Cancel anytime.
Reddit is not the only AI citation lever. LinkedIn, YouTube, Wikipedia and your own site all matter. But Reddit is the lever most Australian agencies are not telling you about, and it is the single most-cited source in the engines your customers are now using.
